Network Rail Scotland Route – Troon Station – Fire Emergency Response and Remediation
The Challenge
On Saturday 17th July 2021, Network Rail Control contacted CPMS. Troon station was on fire and we were instructed to attend immediately. We had a team onsite within the hour. On completion of Fire- Fighting activities the following day, the site was handed to CPMS. The station building had been destroyed, the OLE was damaged and the line was blocked with debris.
The Solution
CPMS immediately arranged for utility disconnections, mobilised plant to assist fire and police investigators to recover evidence from within the station building footprint.
The first priority was to design and install a temporary vertical and lateral propping/restraint system to the steel framework until such time as the condition could be assessed. By Monday 19th July, CPMS had appointed a demolition contractor and full demolition of the fire damaged building was undertaken. Working closely with our temporary works designer and the Network Rail DPE, the platform canopy propping was installed on Tuesday 20thJuly. On completion of the temporary works, the damaged canopy glazing system was removed by our in-house glazing team. With the glazing removed it was possible to carry out a structural inspection of the steelwork.
The site was cleared and the station was opened at 05.00 on Friday 23rd July with trains only stopping on the adjacent platform. Platform 2. On platform No1, utilising normal ROTR possessions/Isolations, the canopies were dismantled, surface repairs carried out, temporary power installed, barriers installed. Platform No1 reopened on Monday 26th July.
Inspection of the glazed canopy units deemed them unsuitable for reuse. CPMS undertook all assurance to allow crane lifting to be utilised for removal of all 7 canopy units undertaken within1 ROTR Possession & Isolation. Removal of the glazed canopies allowed access to the decorative whale bone arches, preparation and painting of all steelwork on Platform 1 to the mid-point of the track continued under ROTR.
New canopy glazing system was fabricated to match exactly the destroyed system and installed, with the canopies complete the site was handed back to Network Rail for the next stage of the works.
